The diagnosis or the classification is mainly based on the Eurofever criteria, which also includes genetic testing (Eurofever. 2023). You may need to do some laboratory or radiographic studies that would help you to differentiate between other conditions that mimic FMF, such as the other periodic fever syndromes, acute abdomen, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, SLE, or rheumatoid arthritis (Bashardoust B. 2015; Bhatt H. 2023).
Now, genetic testing can verify and confirm the diagnosis, but around 10% of the patients may have non-confirmatory genetic results and here your clinical symptoms and your wisdom and differential will be important (Bhatt H. 2023). Even with access to these diagnostic criteria and techniques, patients may still face long delays in diagnosis, which can cause serious complications. Indeed, early and accurate diagnosis of FMF is essential for proper treatment (Hausmann. 2018; Bashardoust B. 2015).
